  • Black gel icing color
  • Red gel icing color
  • 2 1/4 cups unsalted butter, for frosting
  • 8 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup natural unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract, for frosting
  • 57 tbsp water/cream, for frosting
  • 1/4 tsp salt, for frosting
  • 4 oz red candy melts, for decoration
  • 2 tbsp heavy whipping cream, for decoration
  • Sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in one bowl; cream butter, oil, sugar, and vanilla in another. Add eggs one at a time.
  3. Alternate mixing dry ingredients and buttermilk into the creamed mixture until combined.
  4. Divide batter; mix melted chocolate and black gel icing color into one half; tint the other half red if desired.
  5. Alternate dollops of both batters in pans, swirling gently with a knife.
  6. Bake for about 20 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean, then cool completely.
  7. For frosting, beat butter with powdered sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, salt, and water/cream to desired consistency.
  8. Frost cooled cakes and decorate with melted red candy melts as 'blood.'
